One of the neat GM tricks I used was to "turn back the clock" on the players. I went through character generation the usual way, allowing the players to build up their attributes and powers and extras.
Once they had their characters in a complete form I said "okay, now you know what you want to be ... we're starting off five years before these characters were generated."
What I did was secretly scale back from 100 points to 80 and the players never knew (1) how many points got shaved off, or (2) where those points came from. In other words, I had created a situation where the players had a general, vague sense as to who they were but no exact numbers from which to work.
And I had a ready-made "wish list" for character advancement purposes. Of course it turned out that some of the characters went off in a different direction and never regained their original status, but some of the others ended up pretty much where they thought they were starting.
A wonderful campaign start. What do you think?

If you get buy-in from the players, it can be incredible. Hitting them with it sight unseen, no so much.

Well, they had no idea it was coming and seemed to enjoy it. On the other hand, if this was a style I used all of the time they might get tired of it in a hurry.

I can imagine they were quite surprised. So the players never got back to the way their initial characters were created? That's kind of odd....
