 The Jewel of Judgement
« Thread Started on Jun 12, 2008, 7:14am »

Sometimes you have to wonder what Roger was thinking. There's this really powerful item called the Jewel of Judgement and traditionally the king of Amber wears it as a sign of his office.

1. Eric wore the Jewel. He died.

2. Corwin wore the Jewel. Caine still inflicted a near-fatal hit on him.

3. Brand wore the Jewel. Fiona was able to counter anything Brand did, and with Corwin's help, Caine shot him into the Abyss.

4. Oberon wore the Jewel to fix the Pattern. He died. Or did he?

5. Now Random has it.

Sounds like a pretty unlucky piece of jewelry to me, unless being King of Amber is supposed to lead one into tragedy.

Well, IMO, the stories are based on the Tragic Hero, so I'd say it's pretty likely.

It seems to me like the Jewel isn't really cursed, but that it has the habit of draining energy from its wielder (sort of like Stormbringer in Moorthingy's Elric books).

If a person used the Jewel and then took the time to rest, maybe it wouldn't be so dangerous.

Maybe it's just bad luck for egomaniacal jerks? ;)

random used to have it- hes still around, but the jewel is stuck in Coral's eye now. and it seems to have an entirely different range of powers when implanted.

It makes me wonder how implanting would change its side effects.

You're right. I forgot about that part. :-[

I wonder if it's a function of implanting or intent. In other words, maybe bad things happened to Eric because of the way he tried to use it, and Coral isn't trying those things so the Jewel isn't affecting her the same way. It might not have anything to do with the implant effect at all.

I like the idea of intent. Eric had a different intent in using the Jewel than Random did, so it could be that he was affected differently.

Hah! I just caught that the board censor doesn't like the last name of Elric's author. :D
